AI for transforming public services? We're not just talking, we're doing

The UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, has recently outlined ambitious plans to leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) to transform public services and boost the economy.
One aspect of his announcement is using AI to address everyday issues such as potholes. Interestingly, this was achieved several years ago by at least one authority I am aware of alongside Methods. Collaborating with Swindon Borough Council, we developed an innovative IoT and AI solution that revolutionised maintenance reporting. Our approach combined real-time video streams, GPS tracking, and deep neural networks on refuse vehicles to automatically spot infrastructure issues - from potholes to graffiti and fly-tipping. This smart system didn't just identify problems; it enhanced service delivery by improving location accuracy and workforce efficiency, creating a more responsive public service. The results? A proactive approach to maintenance that's both cost-effective and citizen-focused!
This initiative by our Government is part of a broader strategy to integrate AI across various sectors, aiming to enhance efficiency and service delivery. However, to effectively harness AI to drive economic growth and improve public services, we need to ensure that the technology is used safely and responsibly with suitable guardrails.
On a personal note, I am glad that over the festive season, I undertook three ISC2 online courses and successfully passed the AI for Cyber Security, Planning for Secure by Design AI, and Aligning with Global AI Regulations certifications. These courses have further equipped me with the knowledge to navigate the complexities of AI in cyber security and align with global standards.
As we navigate these transformative times, it is essential to stay informed and engaged.
