Rounding off our Q&A Series with some of our inspirational women at Methods, is Alison, Head of Marketing ready to break down the barriers...
Q. What inspired you to pursue a career in technology, and how has your journey led you to your current role?
I started work selling office consumables for IBM, getting the job through a temp agency. The need to pay rent inadvertently kicked off my career in tech. I moved to another IT company to take up a role as a marketing exec where they sponsored my Chartered Institute of Marketing qualification. I have subsequently worked for several IT companies across the UK, Europe and the US.
Q. Are there barriers when it comes to women getting into tech?
I don’t think there are barriers for women getting into tech but there are certainly barriers to them progressing. As we see more diversity at senior leadership levels, those barriers should start to be dismantled. It’s a slow process.
Q. Can you share an example of how your work has directly impacted a client or end-user?
Part of my role is to highlight our clients’ innovative and inspiring work. It has been such a pleasure to nominate clients for industry awards and see their genuine delight at being shortlisted or winning. A case in point is the Women in Tech awards where clients from DfE, Defra and HMCTS were finalists and winners.
Q. Why is it important to hire women in technology?
It’s important to hire diversity. Teams that reflect society perform more effectively.
We hope you have enjoyed getting to know some of our amazing people at Methods, and even managed to meet a few of them at the Women of Silicon Roundabout!
