Modernising infrastructure through Cloud Migration
Challenge
Abertay University sought to comprehensively modernise its digital infrastructure by migrating systems and services to Azure. The initiative aimed to eliminate the physical data centre, address ageing infrastructure, strengthen cyber security, and create a more flexible, resilient technological ecosystem that could support teaching, learning, and research.
Solution
The project team implemented a strategic Azure Cloud Migration approach, focusing on a hybrid Cloud environment with native Azure capabilities.
They migrated 212 VMware virtual servers hosting approximately 180 applications within a 12-month timeframe. The migration utilised Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) strategies with opportunities for Platform as a Service (PaaS) optimisation, and included a innovative Azure Lab Services proof of concept for supporting specialised courses like ethical hacking.
Impact
The University achieved a robust, secure digital infrastructure that transformed digital services across teaching, research, and professional domains.
By leveraging Azure, Abertay developed a resilient technological platform that enhanced cyber security, improved operational agility, and provided flexible learning environments.
The migration enabled rapid adaptation to emerging technological needs, with minimal learning curve for both staff and students, and positioned the University at the forefront of digital education infrastructure.
